Jack-O'-Lanterns!

I must confess that every single October when I write this blog post, I have to look up where the hyphens and apostrophes go in the word "jack-o'-lantern".  That's just a lot of punctuation for one word!  In order to avoid typing those two hyphens and the awkward mid-word apostrophe more than necessary, I'll make this a photo blog post of the carving, scooping, and designing of our pumpkins... along with some outtakes of my attempts to get a picture of the kids with their finished creations.  Enjoy!

Tailgate Time!

As loyal Wake Forest fans and football season ticket holders, we love watching the Demon Deacons play.  However, sometimes the best part of the football game is the tailgate, which was the case last Saturday for the WFU vs. NC State game.  We went with our good friends, the Bells, who also live in Oak Ridge and have children the same age as Luke & Leah.  The Bells are NC State fans, so we have a fun rivalry with them.  Grandpa was also visiting, and joined us for last weekend's game/tailgate: 

You may notice that Luke is eating a sandwich in these pictures.  That kid ate over half of the food at the tailgate (and we had 11 people there)!  Everyone was astounded at the volume of food that he eats, and how he is hungry literally all of the time.  I really get it now about growing boys.  It's amazing... 

We brought lots of yummy food and drink to our tailgate, set up corn hole, played music, and had games... And this is what the two second graders spent the morning doing:

Reese is in the same class as Luke, and both of these kiddos are huge bookworms.  Meanwhile, the four year-olds set up camp in our trunk while they colored and played:  

After a great tailgate, the game started, and within a matter of moments, the score was 28-0, with NC State in the lead.  It was touchdown after touchdown, and when I glanced at Leah, I noticed that our sweet little Demon Deacon fan was blinking back tears.

In an attempt to salvage the day, I asked her, "Leah, do you want to be an NC State fan today?"

She eagerly nodded her head, and switched allegiances in the blink of an eye.  Reese taught Leah the Wolfpack sign, gave her a pair of glasses, and Wake Forest lost a fan:

The game was painful for some of us to watch, but we still had a great time with our friends.  It's really fun for us to be surrounded by so many North Carolina schools/ACC rivals and be able to go to games and tailgates.

NC State may have won last week, but as we reminded Leigh and Michael: 

"Basketball season is right around the corner!"

Day at the Farm

Leah's preschool class had their first field trip last week, and visited J Razz & Tazz Farm.  Leah was SO excited and exclaimed, "It's my first class field trip in my ENTIRE life!"   Despite coming down with a nasty ear infection earlier in the week, Leah rallied and was able to go to the farm on Thursday.  It was a gorgeous day, and the farm was picturesque and idyllic: 

The preschoolers learned about the crops that grow on the farm and took a hayride around the fields.  Leah sat beside her "new best friend", Silas, and these two were inseparable all day: 

After the hayride, we went through the corn maze, and the kids' favorite part was standing on the bridge that made them "taller than the corn":

Next it was time to play!

The biggest hit of free play on the farm was the silo filled with corn.  The kids were allowed to jump and play in this giant structure, and they absolutely loved it:

Leah proved to be a very good farmer, and honed her tractor-driving and chicken-raising skills, too:

Mommy was thrilled to take pictures of the cute fall displays, and each child was given a small pumpkin to take home at the end of the day:

So happy that I was able to be a part of the day at the farm with my adorable little pumpkin and her class!
