Puddle Stompers

"Rain, Rain, Go Away!
Come Again Another Day!
Luke and Leah want to Play!"

It rained here this weekend.  And rained.  And rained some more.
We tried to keep busy.  I pulled out toys from closets that we haven't seen in months.  We went to Chuck E. Cheese, made a Costco run, and went out to lunch.  But there's only so much you can do with active little guys when being outside for even 10 seconds causes you to be soaked to the bone.  So when the kids asked to play in the rain and stomp in puddles yesterday afternoon, we said, "Sure, why not?!"

Mark and I watched from the sanctuary of our dry garage while our two little puddle stompers had a ball.  At one point, Luke told Leah, "Open your mouth, Peanut," and tried to make a big enough splash that water went into his little sister's mouth.  Awesome, huh?  At least they weren't eating worms!   Enjoy these pictures of our rainy day at home:

Birthday Finale

Phew!  We've finally concluded the Month of Luke with special visiting dignitaries and family celebrations.  Bean and Poppy came for a visit last weekend armed with a car full of presents, plenty of energy (required to keep up with our excited little munchkins), a camera to capture birthday memories, and helping hands to assist with Luke's Super Hero party last weekend.  Here is our birthday boy opening and playing with one of his new Imaginext sets:

Leah was an enthusiastic participant as well, helping me decorate, wearing her party hat, singing "Happy Birthday Dear Bubbie", and digging in as all of those cupcakes and yummy birthday desserts were served:

The kids showed off their reading skills to their grandparents and loved listening to stories, too:

The week before, Grandpa and Beanie (Aunt Jamie) visited us and celebrated Luke's birthday with him.  There were more presents, birthday cake for all, balloons, and lots of fun activities for our little man:

What a wonderful birthday month this 5-year-old had, surrounded by people who adore him and who traveled near and far to celebrate his birthday with him.  Oh, how great it is to be 5!

Super Hero Party!

Our little Super Hero celebrated his 5th birthday with his friends on Sunday with a fun party held at Sportsclub Kids.  When Luke told me that he wanted a Super Hero party this year, I went all-out with this theme.

There were the invitations:

Handmade Super Hero masks:

Goodie bags for guests:

And even buckets of super hero pops for centerpieces:

Of course we carried over the star and "Super Luke" logos to the cupcakes, as well:

The party was absolutely perfect.  We had 18 children come to celebrate Luke's birthday with him, and our birthday boy loved being the center of attention.  The staff at Sportsclub Kids was amazing, and engaged these active preschoolers in gross motor activities, relay races, obstacle courses, and parachute games, all with a Super Hero theme. It was a high energy, exciting party with many fun things to do, and at a great facility.

Leading up to his birthday, Luke repeatedly told us that the only thing that he really wanted to do was to have a pinata at his party.  I took him to Party City to pick one out, but was not thrilled about the idea, as I was picturing 5-year-olds swinging sticks dangerously at each other.  However, Mark talked me into it, and I will happily say that I was wrong in my hesitation.  The pinata worked out beautifully, with each child taking one controlled swing, and super star Luke being the one to actually break open the pinata on his second turn.  Candy flew everywhere, and the squeals of joy from those children and beaming smile of pride on Luke's face were priceless:

As we sang "Happy Birthday" to our new 5-year-old, Luke soaked it all in and blew out his candle, with this hint of a smile on his face:

A special activity for the guest of honor at Sportsclub Kids is to add their handprints to the Birthday Wall, which lists their name and party date.  Luke chose his own paint colors and took this Super Hero responsibility very seriously:

What a wonderful day we had with Super Luke and all of his friends.  It truly was a party fit for a Super Hero!

Birthday Letter to My Five-Year-Old

Dear Luke,

Happy 5th birthday to my boy! Wow- you are a big kid now! You have grown up so much this year, and I am so proud of all you have learned. You’re almost finished with your last year of preschool, and you have matured immensely since your 4th birthday last spring. You will begin kindergarten in a few months as a 5 year-old, and what an exciting adventure that will be! You are ready, and are already asking me questions like, “Mommy, do I really get to eat lunch at school EVERY DAY?!”

You love learning, and are an amazing, bright child, who is full of interesting tidbits and facts about the most abstract topics: “Mommy, did you know that Abraham Lincoln was our 16th president, and that he was a spectacular man?” You became interested in geography this year, love your globe and U.S. States puzzle, and educated us on details of the solar system. Your preschool teachers often share amusing stories about the things that you teach them and your classmates, like how far away Colorado is, the difference between honey bees and bumble bees, and the ridiculously complex words that you thought of when it was letter “D” week (like “demolition” and “deinonychus”). You’ve taught me the names of many superheroes and various species of dinosaurs this year, and your zest for learning is contagious.

How proud I am of you this year, as you became a fluent reader, almost overnight! You have always excelled at memorizing words and books, but it still astounds me to watch you pick up a new book and read it to me. My baby boy, who once didn’t know how to walk or talk, who needed me for everything, is now an independent reader, which boggles my mind. You learned to write this year, too, and are ambidextrous with handwriting, using both hands equally well. When you turned 4, you could barely form an“L” to start your name, and now you have mastered uppercase and lowercase letters and write full sentences. You add and subtract, tell time, and are learning the rules of card games and sports. T-ball is one of your favorite new activities, and you win the award for spirit each game, eagerly chasing after grounders, running your heart out as you round the bases, and strutting with a little swagger in your step while wearing that precious uniform.

You are funny kid, who likes telling riddles and Knock Knock jokes. You love playing computer games like PBS Kids or your Leapster, and you fiddle around with the IPad and any electronic gadget that you can find. In fact, you programmed our GPS this year to speak and give written directions in Arabic. It took Daddy and I several days to figure out how to reconfigure the navigation system back to English, but how hilarious the whole episode must have seemed to you. Such silly, incompetent parents you have, who can’t even change the language on our Garmin!

As a 4 year-old, you learned how to handle consequences so much better, and you have matured socially and emotionally. There are still “Time Outs”for discipline, but you usually accept these without throwing tantrums, you can express your emotions in words better and have come a looonnng way with impulse control and age-appropriate boy aggression. We have learned that you require a lot of sleep (like both of your parents) and your behavior and mood depend on getting a good night of rest. Since you don’t nap anymore, we put you to bed early (around 7 p.m.) and you fall asleep immediately, after 12+ hours of a busy day full or playing and learning. You sleep until 6 or 7 a.m., and we have found that even slight delay in your bedtime results in a tired little boy the next day. The consistency of your routine is such an improvement from last year when you napped sporadically, thus being up late one night and crashing the next.

You are still extremely tall for your age, and are a healthy, active boy who is in constant motion. You remain the best little eater I know. It is a gift that we don’t have to worry about your nutrition, and you willingly eat your vegetables because you tell us that they “will make me fast and strong.” You tried to convince your teachers that you were “allergic” to Oreos because you don’t like them, which I think is a first for any preschooler!

You begin each day by crawling into bed with me if I am still asleep, and it’s a wonderful way to wake up, snuggling with my little man. You tell me every single day that you are going to marry me when you grow up, and have gone so far as to plan that “Daddy will go live somewhere else.” Not sure how he feels about that, but I will eat up your attention and devotion for as long as you will allow it. When Daddy went out of town for work recently, he told you that you were the man of the house, and to please watch over and take care of Mommy, Leah, and Winnie. You paused to consider this important responsibility and then asked, “Daddy, is God out of town, too?” You often tell me, "Mommy, I love you more than anything in the world," and there is no greater gift for a mother than to hear these words from her son, spoken with such sweet affection and innocence.

I loved this year of you being 4, and the tangible ways that I watched you grow and thrive. You are happy and energetic. You are surrounded by love and you exude joy and enthusiasm. I love watching you embrace new experiences, and the exuberance with which you approach all things in your life. You are such a special, unique, old soul, my Luke, and I am honored to celebrate the first five years of your life with you today on your birthday… to have shared each big and small moment of your early childhood with you. I’ve rocked you as an infant, held your hand as a toddler, and watched you leave the nest for the first time as a preschooler. This year, you will spread your wings even farther as you officially become a school-aged “big kid”. We have so much to look forward to together, and it is a privilege and my life’s joy to be your mother. No matter how big you get, you will always be my little man, and I love YOU more than anything in the world. Happy Birthday!      Love, Mommy

Mimi's Visit

Mimi came to visit us over Spring Break and we enjoyed having her celebrate Easter with our family.  We also had lots of fun at home, and the kids absolutely adored having their grandmother's undivided attention to play and read books:

Leah, Mimi, and I went out to a Ladies' Lunch downtown while the boys were at tee ball practice:

We also had a fun outing at Chuck E. Cheese's while Mimi was here.  Leah is old enough to enjoy some of the games now, and we loved her enthusiasm as she ran around, placing her game tokens in any coin slot she could find:

The real live Chuck E. Cheese made an appearance while we were there, and our once mascot-shy Leah ran right up to him, chasing him around the arcade.  A giant flash mob of kids followed Chuck E. Cheese and started imitating his dance moves, shouting and jumping along with the music.  I thought Leah would be terrified and run away screaming, but she remained front and center in the middle of the crowd for the entire time... the tiniest fan, and one of the cutest (in my completely unbiased opinion!):

We also began Luke's birthday festivities while Mimi was here.  It was the first of several parties for our almost 5-year old, and who can resist an excuse to celebrate with grandparents while they are in town?  So the month of celebrating our Super Hero commenced:

There were themed-presents,

 smiles from the birthday boy,

coordinating balloons and cards,

and even Batman himself stopped by to say "Hi!":

The first of Luke's birthday desserts was a Super Hero cookie cake...

...which was a big hit with Super Luke:

We hope all your birthday wishes come true, my beautiful big boy, and thank you to Mimi for a wonderful visit and a great kick-off to the Month of Luke!

Weekend Activities

Hooray!  It finally feels like spring!  The beautiful weekend weather meant that we were able to do lots of yard work.  Luckily, we had some adorable assistants to help us with all of our outdoor projects.

First, there was some edging to be done.  Love those safety goggles!

Next, we needed to prepare our beds for planting:

These helpers formed quite a little parade as they brought wheelbarrows full of mulch to our gardens:

The key to successful mulching in our family is for each gardener to use their own special (Disney Cars and Princess) gardening tool:

Daddy helped with the heavy labor and finishing touches:

Phew!  All that work sure can tucker a girl out!

Mr. Future Quarterback was pretty pooped, too!  I'd like to point out here that both kids wear their boots every time they do "yard work"(which is my favorite adorable detail):

We also spent lots of time giving Winnie some extra attention.  She's had a set-back in her healing process, and now has to wear a huge e-collar at all times (so she won't lick/scratch at the wound from her knee surgery):

We repeatedly tell Winnie that her "Easter bonnet" is very pretty, but I'm not sure she's buying it.  Luckily, she is tolerating her new head wear ok, but it's not fun for any of us:

The kids are being extra sweet to their doggie, and those loving belly rubs seem to be just the right medicine:

Last, but not least, we have been busy with lots of imaginative play.  Here's Super Luke, wearing his cape, completing his super hero puzzle:

L&L are playing "Bank" here.  Leah recently got her own pink piggy bank, and somehow Luke convinced his little sister to put all of her coins into his blue pig instead.  Future con artist or genius millionaire in the making?  You decide:

This is one of my favorite new games.  The kids pretend that they are on a bus, and Luke "drives" Leah all over town.  I pretend that I'm not listening or paying attention, but their dialogue as they play this game together is just precious:

We had a great spring weekend, but Luke's most exciting event was crossing the last day of Spring Break off the calendar.  He is practically jumping for joy at the prospect of returning to preschool tomorrow, and can't wait for Monday morning to come!
