Fire Station Party!

Luke's 4th birthday party was held at the fire station on Saturday, and it was amazing! The firemen did such a wonderful job with the children, and Luke was very excited to have so many of his friends come to his party.

Our family at the firehouse:

I loved Luke's cake this year (the woman who made Luke's 1st birthday cake also did this one, and it was absolutely adorable):

The party began with a tour of the station, and Luke "drove" all of his friends to fight a fire:

Sparky, the fire dog, also made an appearance. Here's the birthday boy with his new best friend:

Next, the fire chief demonstrated how to dress in uniform. Somehow Mommy ended up donning this get-up, which everyone found very entertaining!

Cake and singing followed, as we celebrated our special birthday boy:

Of course we had to take a picture of our little firefighters with their hats on:

Luke loved his party, and was thrilled to be the center of attention. Oh, how we love that cute little fireman! Here is a slideshow of more of Luke's fire station party pictures:

That evening, we had one tired little boy, wearing his fire truck pjs, and dreaming sweet birthday dreams:

Birthday Letter

Dear Luke,

Happy, happy 4th birthday to you, sweet boy! I anticipate that you’ll leap out of bed this morning, full of exuberance and energy (much like you begin most days!). How lucky you are that your birthday falls on a preschool morning, so you can share the day with your beloved teachers and friends. We will take in the cupcakes that we made together yesterday (“They NEED to have sprinkles, Mommy”, you told me.), go out to lunch at whatever restaurant you choose, and have a family party at our house with Bean & Poppy tonight. We will celebrate you, my dear 4 year-old son, and I, of course, will reflect on this day four years ago, when you entered the world and changed my life forever.

Oh, what a year we’ve had! Three was everything that I imagined it would be… It was boundless energy, jumping off the couch, and continued obsessions with construction vehicles. It was Thomas the Tank Engine, Disney Cars, and mud puddles for stomping. It was dinosaurs and fire trucks, soccer and playgrounds, giggles and tantrums. Three was full of sing-along songs, am-i-dals, monster trucks, and caterpillars.

But here’s what I didn’t know about three:

Three also meant countless kisses for Mommy, bear hugs every day, and spontaneously telling me, “Mommy, you’re my best friend.” Three was the age where you paused, and asked me, “Do you know how I love you so much?” Three was the loss of your daily nap, and the gradual disappearance of your sweet baby scent.  I didn't know how strong the bond between a Mommy and her little boy could be and how you would steal my heart completely at Three.

I didn’t realize how much Three would teach me about my parenting skills. This year was extremely challenging at times. You were finally able to articulate the feelings of jealousy and adjustment that you had about your baby sister, by telling us, “We NEED to send Leah back to the hop-sital.” It was hard not to smile at your unique pronunciation of “hospital”, but it broke my heart to see you unhappy at times this year, as you struggled with the continued transition of competing for our attention. We had ups and downs together as Daddy and I learned the most effective ways to parent a very strong-willed three year-old, who tested boundaries and could be extremely stubborn.

I should have known that Three would be so full of questions, with your curious, inquisitive nature. You want to know how everything works… from directions on street signs to how God made us. You are so, so smart and I often think you are an old soul. You are such a FUN kid, too! You’ve always had a stream of consciousness verbal dialogue when communicating, where you narrate what you are doing, thinking, and feeling. At age 1, this was basic and often in third person: “Baboo climbing, Baboo walking, etc…”. When you were 2, you were able to put more words and sentences together, and began to show us your incredible memory and attention to detail. But this past year, at age 3, you astounded us with your often grown-up insights, continued love and memorization of books, and formation of many complex ideas and opinions.

I also didn’t know that Three meant that you would resemble Daddy more and more every day. You boys make me laugh with many of the same mannerisms and facial expressions. What a gift these moments are for me, to be able to picture the man you’ll become, as I recognize the similarities and resemblances in my husband and my son: my little mini-Mark. Three has provided me with glimpses of the big kid that you are becoming, and I love watching you change and grow.

You have brought us so much joy as a three year-old. Your sister absolutely adores you, and you can make her smile and laugh more than anyone else.  Daddy and I have believed that the sun and moon revolve around you since the moment your “flicker” entered our lives, and you are still the center of our universe. How deeply we love you and have enjoyed watching you become your own independent person this year. You have taken many of your first steps out of the nest as a 3 year-old, as you began preschool, and you have done beautifully. I look forward to the year ahead, and the many new adventures that Four will surely bring. Happy Birthday to you, my darling boy. I love you more than tongue can tell.

Love, Mommy

The Last Days of 3

Luke’s 4th birthday is on Friday, and as I know I will have lots of emotions associated with that milestone, I wanted to separately record some of my favorite moments of Luke’s last days of being 3.

Some of my son’s questions this week that have literally left me speechless:

“Mommy, if a spider doesn’t have teeth, how does it chew?”

“When a mosquito sucks my blood, how do I make new blood?”

“If I kiss you too many times, will I run out of love?.. How will I get more love?”

“What is this part called (pointing to something on the back of a grasshopper)? What does it do?”

“How can God see us through our roof?”

His curious, inquisitive nature has me groping for words, and nervous that pretty soon, my preschooler is going to outsmart me…

He also uses words and phrases that make me wonder where in the world this child learned some of his vocabulary. Some of Luke’s most memorable lines at age 3:

“I am very cross with you right now.” (Who under the age of 85 uses that term?)

“You stink me up! Ha Ha!” (meaning, “You crack me up!”)

“Preschool/picking up toys/running sure tuckers me out. Phew!”

"You quit at the top of your game!" (quoted directly from the Disney Cars movie, usually when Luke is "cross" with us..)

“Can we send Leah back to the hop-sital?”

As we bid good-bye to 3 this Friday, we leave you with this video of our joyful, silly boy.

Mimi and Grandpa's Visit

It's been almost a week since Mimi and Grandpa were here, and we are still reveling in all of the fun that we had during their visit. Besides celebrating Easter with them, we had an early family birthday party for Luke (who turns 4 on Friday, and of course is enjoying his "birthday month" of attention). Luke also showed off some of his new sports skills and talents to Grandpa:

Not to be outdone, Leah also showed off her walking (she is now taking steps on her own- video to be posted soon!), and swinging like a big girl at the playground:

Leah also proved to her grandparents that she is still a snuggle bug and is just the right size still to fit in their laps:

Luke loved playing with his new presents, and was full of energy and excitement with Mimi and Grandpa. What fun we had!

Workin' at the Car Wash

The children's new favorite activity:

Setting up a "carwash" for Luke's vehicles, and carefully detailing each one with toothbrushes:

We have some recent additions to our 'struction collection, as Grandpa just brought us a box of his treasured trucks from when he was a child:

As you can see, these vehicles are in good hands. The kids' attention to their carwash is adorable and makes us laugh:

We proudly present our April Car Wash Employee of the Month. Feel free to bring your cars over anytime- He only charges a cookie to do each one!

Happy Easter!

We had a wonderful Easter, and the weather here could not have been more beautiful. We woke up to find that the Easter Bunny left baskets of goodies for the children. Of course Luke had about 600 questions including: "How does the Easter Bunny actually fit all those baskets into his bag?... How does he hop to our house carrying everything?... and, What exact time does he deliver the loot?". Sheesh. I thought we had until our kids were about age 10 to be interrogated about such details! Luke's reaction to the toys in his basket was priceless, however, and he was so excited about each item:

Leah was old enough this year to enjoy exploring her basket on her own, and made it very clear to her brother (by her facial expression) that her goodies were strictly off limits to him:

Next we dressed in our Easter finery and went to church, where we took two of my favorite pictures from the day:

Mimi and Grandpa were here and we loved having them for Easter. We went out to a yummy Easter brunch after church and took some family pictures downtown at Falls Park:

In the afternoon, the kids opened presents and played outside before Easter dinner:

Here is a slideshow of more of our Easter pictures:

From baskets of treats to Easter outfits, family traditions, spring sunshine, and jellybeans, we had a fun-filled day and wish you a joyous Easter season!

Mommy's Easter Eggs!

We're enjoying a fun-filled week of Easter parties, egg hunts, and springtime fun. Leah has been especially adorable dressed up in her Easter bubble and festive attire:

The kids (and Daddy) had a blast hunting eggs at our neighborhood Easter party this weekend:

Someone simply adores her big brother. He makes her giggle and laugh more than anyone else:

We decorated an "Easter Egg Tree" in our backyard for the first time... I remember doing this as a child, and it is a fun, colorful tradition. Luke was especially excited to climb the ladder to hang the eggs:

We also had lots of fun at our annual play group Easter egg hunt yesterday. The kids were very interested in checking out their loot this year:

Happy Easter week from our little Easter Eggs!
