Happy New Year!

I saw this posted on Facebook last night and thought about how fitting it is for our family:

We didn't have New Year's Eve plans last night.  No one has ever accused us of being night owls, and I told a friend that I wanted to "sleep my way into the New Year... and be tucked away in bed by 9 p.m.".  Any mama who has a child that doesn't consistently sleep through the night will understand my New Year's wish for rest.

When Mark surprised us by coming home from work a little early, we decided to go out to dinner at our local pizza place.  "Elizabeth's Pizza" is a quaint, tiny, casual authentic Italian restaurant and when we walked in at 5:30 p.m., we noticed that there was a live video stream from Italy playing on their big screen televisions.  It was Italy's countdown to midnight, since Europe is 6 hours ahead.  There were performers, music, and even a ball that dropped with fireworks afterward.  The owner of the restaurant poured Prosecco for all to toast the New Year and came out to greet us.  I decided that this was the absolute perfect celebration for us:  6 p.m. festivities and Italy combined!  The best part is that we went to Elizabeth's last year on New Year's Eve.  We had just relocated to Greensboro two days earlier, and wanted to escape the apartment and do something festive.  Now we've established a new North Carolina tradition, and this turned out to be one of my favorite New Year's Eves with the kiddos.

Before we went out to dinner, we attempted an NYE photo shoot which accurately captures our crazy, chaotic, joyful life right now.  Here's proof that sometimes the outtakes do make the best pictures:

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Our holiday events are underway, which means that it's time to see Santa Claus!  I was particularly attached to the St. Nick that we saw every year in Greenville and have been joking (kind of) that we may need to drive back to SC to take our annual picture of the kids with Santa.  However, we found that Santa also comes to North Carolina, and after a wonderful visit with him last week and getting a great photo of both kids smiling in his lap, Mommy was appeased.

Leah also had a "bonus" opportunity to see Santa at our town's tree lighting last weekend, and she certainly didn't pass up the chance to get an extra candy cane and "remind" him of her wish list.  In fact, the below picture of Leah with Santa was in the digital edition of our local newspaper!

Santa Claus also made an appearance at our house, as Luke played "Father Christmas" in the children's Christmas Program at church and wore a Santa costume for his role:

The kids have been practicing for weeks, and our dear little Santa Claus did a great job this morning!

We're having so much fun preparing for Christmas and enjoying this festive season!
