Mimi's visit (narrated by Luke)

Hi everyone- It's Luke! I had so much fun when my Mimi came to visit last weekend. Here is a pictoral essay of some of the highlights of our time together:

We started out the weekend relaxing, catching up, and reading the paper.

Next, I decided that I wanted to make Mimi a nice breakfast on Saturday morning. Here I am searching for cookware in my cabinet.

I know that there are eggs and bacon in here somewhere...

I showed off my driving skills as we took a cruise around the neighborhood.

Mimi let me stay up late to party when she baby-sat me on Saturday night. Don't tell Mom and Dad!

On Sunday, we went out to lunch after church. Here I am perusing the menu with my mom.

I love going to restaurants now that I eat big boy food!

We had such a great time playing together last weekend. Come back soon, Mimi! We miss you! Love, Luke (and family)

My Brown-Eyed Boy

Luke looks so much like a little boy to me these days, and no longer resembles that tiny baby that we brought home from the hospital 10 months ago. Somehow, he made the transition from infant to toddler much too quickly. My comfort is that he is so
much fun right now, is very expressive, and has the most loveable personality! Luke's dimples still melt my heart, and I know that his irrisistible smile is going to be one of his saving graces as he gets older and into trouble. How can I be a firm, stern parent when those dimples are just too cute? Luke's eyes have also changed from his newborn slate gray color to the most beautiful, deep brown, and they often seem to sparkle with joy. What a blessing it is to spend my days with my little sidekick, my sweet brown-eyed boy!

Recently, we played with bubbles for the first time, and Luke was awed by this magical event. It was so cute to see him stare at the bubbles in wonder and reach for them.

Why Daddy is More Fun

Mommy's solution to Luke's newfound obsession with climbing the stairs:
Baby Gates and Childproofing

Daddy's approach: Fostering Luke's gross motor skills with close supervision, positive encouragement, and a ride down the banister for a job well done.

"Hey Mom, look what I can do!"

Still climbing...

Almost there!

You'll NEVER convince me to allow Luke to do this!

My two troublemakers!

Wake Forest Basketball

Our family traveled to Winston-Salem yesterday to watch a Wake Forest Basketball game, and we spent a great Valentine's Day weekend in North Carolina. Luke did very well at the game, and we were so thankful that he still fit (barely!) into the Baby Bjorn so that we could carry him through the coliseum. I wasn't sure how easy it would be to contain a mobile 10-month old for several hours, but everything worked out, and the Deacs even won! We ate at the Tavern, our favorite restaurant from our college days, and stayed in a hotel overnight. Luke wasn't thrilled about sleeping in his Pack N' Play, and after several attempts to put him to bed there, we decided (against our usual parenting philosophy) to let him sleep with us so as to avoid waking all the other hotel guests with our screaming baby. With Winnie sprawled out along the entire bottom of the bed and Luke taking up most of the top half (away from all pillows, blankets, and far from the edge of course!), Mark and I were left to scrunch up in one tiny corner, with Mark clinging to the side of the bed for space. He commented today that a king-sized bed has never felt so small! Although, as I was lying awake in the middle of the night, trying not to roll over, shift positions, or even breathe too deeply for fear of disturbing my sleeping family, I realized that there was no place I'd rather be on Valentine's Day- literally surrounded on all sides by so much love!

We took an evening stroll on campus to see the pretty chapel at night!

The only picture we have of our family from the weekend.
(A nice fan took it for us, but it didn't turn out so well, even after lots of photo editing!)

Fire Chief Luke

Luke was invited to his first birthday party this week at Greenville Fire Station #3! When the party invitation came in the mail, I thought about what an important childhood rite of passage it is to go to birthday parties. Although today was just the first of many, many parties that Luke will attend over the years for friends, it made me realize that he really is turning into a little boy, and is no longer a baby anymore. Our family had a great time today celebrating the birthday of our friends' 2 children, and captured some cute pictures of Luke at the firehouse. Enjoy!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Ever since Luke started eating table food, we are astounded by the quantity of food that he can consume in one sitting. At each meal, Mark and I are reminded of the children's book, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", by Eric Carle. This book tells the story of a little caterpillar who eats through pieces of fruit each day of the week, but still remains hungry, until he goes on a ridiculous binge on Saturday (including one piece of chocolate cake, one ice-cream cone, one pickle, one slice of Swiss cheese, one slice of salami, one lollipop, one piece of cherry pie, one sausage, one cupcake, and one slice of watermelon)... all in preparation to build a cocoon and emerge as a beautiful butterfly. Similar to the caterpillar, Luke's appetite seems endless, and Mark has commented that he is beginning to glimpse how difficult it must have been when he was growing up for his mom to keep a house full of food with 4 young boys eating her out of house and home. So far today, our thriving 23-pound child has eaten:

1.5 servings of Baby oatmeal
1/2 banana
An entire carton of YoBaby Peach Yogurt
Many pieces of cut-up cantelope
1/2 cup cottage cheese
An enormous serving of noodle, chicken, and pea casserole (see photo, and yes, that is a full-sized 9-inch plate!)
Also, he has nursed 3 times already today.

And, it's only 11:35 in the morning...

(Look who's waiting in the background for scraps to drop!)

Our next door neighbor, Peter, (who is Korean and doesn't speak much English) came over the other day and hadn't seen Luke in awhile. He asked how old Luke was, and when we said 9-months, Peter's eyes grew wide, and he commented incredulously, "Wow! He is super-sized!"

Mark and I found that slightly hilarious, as if we stopped by the McDonald's drive-through during pregnancy and asked God to "super-size" our order for one, healthy baby boy!

But sometimes, the truth lies in these simple phrases.
Yes, dear friends, Luke is super-sized indeed.
And we marvel in wonder at our good eater...
our own very hungry caterpillar!
